So - I've never been in a car accident (knock on wood)...but last week came pretty darn close. My friend Cassidy, who just moved to CT, and I decided to go to the Cheesecake factory for dinner - which was soooo good by the way. And on our way back we were going to stop by someone's house in my ward who was having a few people over. Well - I guess we missed the turn to get to his place so we had to turn around...and that is when it almost happened.
I had turned into a driveway to turn around. I looked and didn't see anything coming....so i backed out, put the car in drive, and just barely started to move forward when from out of no where this car came flying and all of a sudden was right up next to me...i felt something hit...heard a bad scrapping sound...and just looked at Cassidy and said "what in the world just happened?" I was so confused. That car must have come flying around the corner or something...
Anyway - I pulled over to the side and got out of my car to look at the damage....I figured our cars must have scrapped all along side each other or something. But when I got out and looked at my car - there was nothing! Not one thing! Which made me even more confused....I asked Cassidy if we even hit....and she said she thought just the mirrors might have knocked each other. Meanwhile - the other car had started to move forward to straighten his car out...and i just heard this horrible noise....so obviously something was wrong with his car. I walked over to it (oh..and it was a Beamer by the way) and this older couple got out of the car. The wife was already on the phone with the cops and she was definitely trying to blame me for everything. I didn't see anything on their car either - not a scratch. but then they said something about a mailbox....and sure enough - they had completely taken out a mailbox and it was wedged very tightly under their car! :) that is what the horrible scrapping sound was.
Anyway - they wanted to exchange insurance....so we did. Then the cops showed up with a flashlight and walked around my car...and they also looked confused b/c there was no damage. I told them what happened...then they went over to the other car who told their side of the story. Another cop showed up and I asked him what they needed to see...and he just said "We probably don't need to see anything of yours...I don't think you are involved in the accident"
I was sooo lucky that car didn't hit me!!! It was a VERY close call...had he moved over just a tad more, my car would not have been so lucky.
Anyway - I waited for the cop to tell me I could go. All he did was write down my license and plate number and that was it...I was done. The poor couple had to figure out how to get that mailbox from out under their car...but obviously they could afford whatever they had to fix.. Moral of the story...old people shouldn't be allowed to drive...oh and..I was one lucky girl! :)
