Do You Smell Something Burning?

Kathy, Dan and the kids came over for dinner after church. I made them one of my favorite college dinners...BBQ chicken Pizza! I just love that stuff! Especially with Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce! And then I even made my grasshopper pie dessert which is to die for! Kathy brought over a delicious cake which looked almost too pretty to eat! So, basically we had a feast!

After dinner we sat around and talked and tried to keep the kids entertained with my very limited toys (I knew that blow-up alien and mini, cheap bball hoop would come in handy for something...). It was just a regular, uneventful Sunday evening...when all of a sudden, while Kathy and I were in cleaning up in the kitchen she said..."Do you smell something burning?"

At first I didn't, but as I came over towards Kathy it was clear that a burning smell was coming up through the vent! I looked a little puzzled at first, then decided to go downstairs to check it out. When I went into the room where the furnace is, the smell was much stronger and the air just seemed thicker! It didn't smell like gas...but Dan and Kathy both suggested we call someone to have them come check it out. (I guess not too long ago some apartment building out their way had blown up from a gas leak!) So, we got the kids and our cell phones, went outside and called 911!!!

And not too long after...911 responded! As we sat on my dark, quiet street, we could hear the sirens coming loud and clear!!! Then a cop car and two fire trucks (yes, two!) came up our streets with all their lights flashing! (Luckily they had at least turned off their sirens). One thing I thought was a little weird though is that none of my neighbors came out to check what was going on!?!! You would think that they would want to know if their building was going to burn down!?!!! I know I would.

I showed the firemen into where the smell was coming from. They tested it for gas leaks and carbon monoxide and all that junk and then called me back in. They told me that nothing was detected (So, we weren't going to die!)...and that the smell was coming from none other than our A/C unit....and that the fan belt had over-heated or something like that!

So, it's a good thing we have all these firemen and policemen to come tell us when our fan-belt overheated! Ya...so I felt a little embarrassed...but they told me that I did the right thing by calling them and that it is always better to be safe!!

So, there you have it! It was quite the welcoming party into my new apartment! But hey...now I can say that I KNOW 911 works. They really do respond---With their lights, sirens, everything! :-)

Update!

So, it's been a little busy! I moved to Connecticut almost 4 weeks ago and there has been little time to do anything besides work, study and unpack. I didn't really realize how busy work would be. Turns out I started during one of our busy seasons! My first 3 days of work were in the NYC office for orientation, the 4th day was my first, and so far only, day in the Connecticut office because I've been at working at a client site ever since. I've enjoyed work so far...but it was really hard at first trying to work all day and then go study all night. My typical schedule for about 2 and 1/2 weeks was wake up at 6 am, go to work until 8pm...then study until 12 or 12:30am. And then start all over the next day. Then I took the Audit portion of the CPA exam and things have been a bit better. I need to start studying again for the next part, but haven't been able to bring myself to do so!

When I first got to Connecticut, I was staying with Kathy (my sister) and her family. It is so nice to have family near by and it was great to have a place to stay while I looked for my own place. (Thanks again Kathy and Dan!). I did find a place--which i've come to love. It's a nice 2 bedroom condo and it's pretty close to work. I just moved in this past weekend. My parents were kind enough to give me some of their furniture, so I went up to Montreal, rented a U-haul and brought a bunch of stuff down here. It was quite an exhausting weekend, but I got a lot done...espescially with my parents to help! They were awesome!

I also have a roommate--her name is Janeen and she also just graduated from BYU and is going to PACE university Law School. She is really nice and so far things have been great!

Well, I just wanted to give everyone a little update! No pictures this time...but hopefully soon! :)
